Ted Ginn Jr.’s Columbus Aviators have fallen to 2-6 following a 14-3 road loss to the Birmingham Stallions in their inaugural UFL season.
The Aviators began the game stalling offensively but received an extra set of downs following a Stallions penalty for hitting Columbus punter Brad Robbins. Columbus did not come through despite the gift and punted away.
Birmingham Stallions quarterback Dorian Thompson-Robinson responded by throwing an interception to Aviators DB DJ Miller Jr. However, Aviators quarterback Jalen McLendon ended the first quarter by throwing an interception of his own.
As the first half wore on, the offenses continued to stall, but Aviators kicker Jonah Dalmas broke the seal in his UFL debut with a field goal to make it 3-0. Later, Birmingham’s kicker Anders Carlson missed a field goal attempt, as Columbus went into halftime with the lead.
The Stallions began the second half with tremendous field position following a return by Deon Cain. The Birmingham offense still could not come through and punted it away.
Columbus responded with another punt, setting up the Stallions for a touchdown with 6:35 left in the third quarter. The touchdown pass from Thompson-Robinson to Jordan Thomas gave Birmingham a 7-3 lead.
The Stallions continued to control the game from there and came through with a blocked field goal attempt courtesy of Steven Gilmore, who ran it all the way back to give the Stallions a 14-3 lead in the fourth quarter.
With the game hanging in the balance, Birmingham sealed the game with another interception from McClendon with 1:12 remaining. Columbus drops to 2-6 following the crushing defeat in Birmingham.
