Ohio State Football announced last week that five upgraded uniform combinations will be in rotation for the 2026 season, but the real question is when we’ll see each one.
Here’s what’s coming: the core home and away sets, both featuring the return of the Buckeye stripe with metallic silver accents, plus three alternates: Tunnel Vision blackout, Sub-Zero white, and Scarlet Rush uniforms. Ohio State Football will use five looks this Fall, so let’s map out when we might see each one.
Core Home: Home vs Ball State
Ohio State opens the season against Ball State at home, which means a traditional look for the Buckeyes. The September 5th matchup will be the debut of the new Core Home scarlet uniforms, featuring the Buckeye Stripe. Ryan Day’s team returns to the iconic look after 20 years of using the helmet stripe on the sleeves instead. This will be a welcome sight for the program and fans, honoring the tradition of Ohio State Football.
Core Away: Away vs Texas
The traditional sets will obviously carry the weight of the schedule. But the game I’m circling early is Ohio State at Texas. The Longhorns’ burnt orange at home against the Buckeyes in the road whites with the Buckeye stripe? That’s two of the most iconic uniforms in college football sharing the field. No need to get too fancy for a game that needs no introduction to set the tone for the entire College Football landscape.
Ohio State’s classic road look is more than sufficient for that stage, and honestly, it might be the most visually compelling matchup of the entire college football season. This game will likely be a Top 5 matchup under the lights in Austin, but could it be another No. 1 vs No. 2 showdown between these two storied programs?

Tunnel Vision Blackout: Home vs Illinois
My prediction for the Tunnel Vision blackout debut is the Illinois game. It’s the best chance at a marquee night game for the Buckeyes on NBC in The Shoe, so it’s the kind of atmosphere that calls for a dark night at The Shoe. Ohio State, in all black under the lights at home, is exactly the setting you engineer for the first big home game.
Though they are rarer these days, any time the Buckeyes can capitalize on a night game in Columbus, they have to for recruiting. Ohio State is no stranger to the early slot playing on FOX’s Big Noon Kickoff, so this would be the September night game for the Buckeyes.
Sub Zero White: Away vs USC
Ohio State wearing the Sub Zero uniforms against Indiana or USC was a lengthy debate. However, the Buckeyes brought them out for a road matchup with Oregon in 2024 on the West Coast with a late local kickoff, so I expect the same here. Indiana will likely be the FOX Big Noon Kickoff game of the week, as it is a highly anticipated rematch of last year’s Big Ten Championship Game. Ryan Day’s team will be all business, wearing the Core Away uniforms.
The Sub Zero white uniforms make their road debut at USC. Coming off a road game at Indiana and a bye week, then heading into a massive home matchup with Oregon, the USC game is the right moment for Ohio State to break out that look on the road. The all-white in the Los Angeles atmosphere has a look to it that fits.
Scarlet Rush: Home vs Oregon
The Scarlet Rush is saved for Oregon, which means back-to-back alternate looks for the Buckeyes. A likely 3:30 kickoff on CBS due to NBC broadcasting Notre Dame vs. Miami that night, with scarlet everywhere and The Shoe rocking for one of the most anticipated home games on the schedule.
Ryan Day and Dan Lanning split their last two matchups, with the Ducks winning in Eugene early in 2024 and the Buckeyes winning the Rose Bowl in blowout fashion to advance in the College Football Playoff. There will be major Big Ten Championship Game implications for this one in Columbus.
Ohio State’s updated uniforms set the standard for the sport, blending tradition with modern trends and themes. The Buckeyes will look clean every time they take the field in one of their five uniform combinations this season, as we await the team’s official release.
