2027 Edge rusher Wyatt Smith commits to Ohio State, adding another key defensive prospect in this recruiting class for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State Buckeyes football continues to strengthen its 2027 recruiting class with the commitment of Wyatt Smith, one of the top defensive prospects in the country out of St. Thomas Aquinas High School. The 6-foot-6, 240-pound edge rusher is ranked as a Top 100 national recruit and the No. 11 edge defender in the 2027 class, giving the Buckeyes another elite piece for the future of their defense.
Known for producing high-level Division I and NFL talent, St. Thomas Aquinas has consistently developed some of the nation’s best football players, and Smith looks ready to continue that tradition at the next level.
Smith brings a rare combination of size, length, instincts, and technical ability off the edge. At 6 feet 6, he already possesses the type of frame college programs search for in modern defensive ends, but what makes him stand out even more is his understanding of leverage and angles at such a young age. He consistently positions himself well against the run, fills gaps with discipline, and uses his long arms to keep blockers from getting into his body.
Rather than simply relying on athleticism, Smith plays with patience and awareness, showing the ability to diagnose plays quickly and react under control. His length allows him to disrupt running lanes and create problems for opposing offenses, while also giving him an impressive tackling radius in open space. He is a clean tackler who wraps up effectively and rarely allows runners to break free once he gets his hands on them.
Smith’s ability to defend the run at a high level already separates him from many young edge prospects, and his physical tools give him enormous upside as a pass rusher as he continues to develop. The combination of his size, football IQ, and physicality makes him one of the more complete defensive players in the 2027 recruiting cycle.
Smith now joins an already impressive defensive group committed to Ohio State’s 2027 class. He pairs with 5-star edge prospect DJ Jacobs to give the Buckeyes another dangerous future duo on the defensive line. Ohio State has also secured commitments from linebacker Quinton Cypher along with safeties Eli Johnson and Angelo Smith, continuing to build speed, versatility, and toughness across every level of the defense.
Together, the group gives Ohio State a strong foundation on defense and reinforces why the Buckeyes remain one of the top recruiting programs in the country.
For Ohio State, landing Wyatt Smith is another major recruiting win and another example of the program’s ability to attract elite defensive talent from across the country. With his size, skill set, and long-term upside, Smith has all the tools to become a difference maker in Columbus.
As the 2027 class continues to grow, the Buckeyes are putting together a defensive unit that could become one of the most talented groups in the nation for years to come.

I’ve had the privilege of working across every corner of the sports media landscape—from covering Friday night lights as a beat writer for PrepRedzone, to reporting with the team at News Channel 4 WSMV (NBC affiliate), and diving deep into recruiting and scouting as an intern at Middle Tennessee State. During my time as a college student at MTSU, I also honed my broadcasting skills at the campus radio station, bringing live sports coverage and in-depth analysis to listeners across campus. My passion for sports runs deep, but nothing fires me up quite like Ohio State football. I can’t wait to bring my energy, experience, and Buckeye enthusiasm to this new opportunity!
