Ohio State baseball swept Maryland this weekend, riding scorching hot offense and standout pitching performances to extend its winning streak to seven and emerge victorious in 11 of the last 12.

The Ohio State baseball team returned to Big Ten play this weekend, welcoming the Maryland Terrapins to Bill Davis Stadium for a three-game series. Justin Haire’s Buckeyes entered the weekend having won four straight, but by Saturday afternoon, they had already clinched the series.

Sunday’s win marked the Buckeyes third straight weekend sweep and first back-to-back Big Ten series sweeps since 2009. Justin Haire’s baseball team has found its rhythm over the last couple of weeks. The program continues its massive step forward as the season progresses, sitting four games above .500 at 17-13 (7-5).

Here’s a recap of this weekend’s action from Columbus.

Friday: Buckeyes Rally to Take Opener, 10-8

Ohio State opened the series on Friday evening, having to scratch and claw from behind, which has become something of a recurring theme for this ballclub lately.

Maryland struck first with two runs in the top of the second on an RBI double and an RBI single to take a 2-0 lead. The Buckeyes answered immediately, capitalizing on back-to-back Terrapin errors in the bottom half to score Maddix Simpson and Dane Harvey and tie the game at two.

The Terrapins nudged back ahead 3-2 on a sacrifice fly in the fourth, but Ohio State took its first lead of the night in the fifth. Henry Kaczmar led off with a double, scored on a Harvey groundout to tie it, and then Lee Ellis delivered an RBI double off the wall to score Mason Eckelman, who had reached on a hit by pitch, putting the Buckeyes ahead 4-3.

Kaczmar struck again in the sixth, this time a double to score Miles Vandenheuvel, extending the lead to 5-3. Then the seventh inning blew the game open.

Eckelman walked to lead off, Ellis followed with a free pass, and Simpson stepped to the plate and went yard for the first time this season. His three-run shot sent the crowd into a frenzy and pushed the lead to 8-3. Vandenheuvel got hit by a pitch, stole second, advanced to third on a Maryland error, and Alex Bemis followed with a triple. Kaczmar then doubled Bemis’ home to make it 10-3, capping a stunning seven-run frame.

Maryland made it interesting with five runs in the eighth to cut the deficit to 10-8, but the Buckeyes closed the door in the ninth, turning an impressive 9-5 double play and inducing a groundout to shortstop to seal it.

Kaczmar and Simpson led the way offensively with three hits apiece. Kaczmar is now riding a 16-game hitting streak. Ryan Zamora improved to 2-0, striking out three over 3.2 innings of work. Andrew Edrington nailed down his first career save, allowing just one hit over 1.1 scoreless frames.

Saturday: Buckeyes Erupt for Six Home Runs, Clinch Series in Slugfest, 14-12

If Friday was a back-and-forth thriller, Saturday was pure chaos, and the Buckeyes thrived having an answer every time Maryland struck.

Ohio State and Maryland combined for 33 hits, 11 home runs, and 26 runs in one of the most electric afternoons Bill Davis Stadium has seen in recent memory. The Buckeyes set season-highs with six home runs and 17 hits, and needed every last one of them.

Maryland jumped out 1-0 on a solo home run in the first, but Bemis answered immediately with a towering shot to dead center to tie it. Kaczmar knocked his fourth double of the series, a pattern developing for the junior, and scored on an RBI groundout from Noah Furcht to put Ohio State up 2-1.

The Terrapins tied it in the second on a sacrifice fly, but CJ Reid had other ideas. The Buckeye connected on his first home run as a Buckeye, a two-run shot that caromed off the videoboard, and Furcht followed with an RBI double to push the lead to 5-2.

Then Maryland’s bats woke up in a big way. A grand slam and a two-run home run in the third gave the Terrapins an 8-5 lead, turning the momentum on its head. Ohio State responded with three home runs of its own in the bottom half. Harvey led off with a line-drive shot to right-center, Mangrum went deep for his first as a Buckeye, and Kaczmar capped the frame with a two-run blast to left. Just like that, it was 10-8 Buckeyes.

Maryland clawed back ahead 12-10 in the sixth on two more home runs and an RBI triple. Ellis answered in the bottom half, going yard with two outs to score two and knot it at 12-12. The Buckeyes then loaded the bases in the seventh on a Terrapin error, a Bemis single, and an Eckelman walk. Harvey, who drove in three on the day, ripped a single to right to score two and hand Ohio State a 14-12 lead it would not relinquish.

Jake Michalak shut the door from there, striking out a season-high eight batters and allowing just one run on five hits to earn his fifth win of the season. He fanned the final three batters in the ninth to seal it.

Bemis was the offensive star, going a career-high 4-for-5 and falling just a triple short of the cycle. Kaczmar extended his hitting streak to 17 games. Six of the nine Buckeye starters recorded two or more hits.

Sunday: Ohio State Shuts Out Maryland 7-0 in Series Finale

Easter Sunday’s weather was not as pleasant as the days prior. 70 and 80-degree days chilled to the mid-40s, but it still wasn’t enough to slow down the streaking Buckeyes.

Unlike the first two games, Ohio State wasted no time jumping out to an early lead, and the second inning set the tone for Justin Haire’s team. The Buckeyes began their scoring when Alex Bemis drew a bases-loaded walk. The walk brought red-hot Henry Kaczmar to the plate, who stayed in the zone, driving in two to extend the lead to 3-0.

However, Ohio State did not stop there in the bottom of the second as Dane Harvey joined the party, knocking in a pair with a single up the middle. The Buckeyes never looked back from the 5-0 lead.

A run in the seventh and eighth gave Ohio State a 7-0 lead, which is where the scoreboard would finalize. After Saturday’s slugfest, the bats were more tempered for both teams. However, Ohio State still had 12 free baserunners as 11 walked and Harvey wore one to climb aboard.

Despite only five hits all afternoon, the Buckeyes managed seven runs and 17 guys on, providing consistent scoring opportunities. Notably, Henry Kaczmar extended his hitting streak to 18 games, while Lee Ellis stole a career-high three bases Sunday afternoon. Pitcher Pierce Herrenbruck earned the win with a strong outing, striking out five in 5.2 scoreless innings.

Ohio State has now won 11 of its last 12 games and sits on a seven-game winning streak. The Buckeyes continue a two-week homestand against Bowling Green on Tuesday at 6:00 pm at Bill Davis Stadium.
