Julian Sayin’s added 15 pounds are transforming Ohio State’s offense in fall camp, fueling sharper throws, chemistry, & a new competitive edge.
Julian Sayin doesn’t look like the same quarterback anymore, and after three days of fall camp, he doesn’t play like him either. As the Buckeyes strap on the pads and grind through the dog days of August, “Iron Sharpens Iron” is becoming the driver for this year’s roster evolution.
The first thing that jumps out with Sayin is the physical transformation. He’s sitting at 215 pounds now, and looks like a different quarterback than the one we watched last season. Working under Coach Mick, Sayin has rebuilt his frame, and that added mass is already showing up in his throwing mechanics.
“The extra weight has helped me in throwing the ball and running the ball,” Sayin said. His new foundation was on full display during red-zone work today, as he zipped passes into extremely tight windows. “Coach Day always says there’s nobody open in the red zone; every window is going to be tight. You got to throw with a ton of pace.”
Julian Sayin on Devin McCuin:
🗣️ “Really talented receiver. A lot of speed. Very smart player—knows where he’s going.”
Sayin also mentioned McCuin is a team-first guy, has a willingness to block, and his work ethic is noticed in the weight room. pic.twitter.com/0qSyV4llsE

Sayin talked about the daily grind of going against a defense that gives him almost nothing easy. He’s embracing it, saying the intensity has hit a new gear now that the pads are popping.
That edge has bred a chippiness Sayin says the offense needs. He’s careful to draw the line, though, as he doesn’t want it turning into extended, time-wasting shoving matches, but he knows that competitive friction in practice is the closest thing to simulating the pressure of a Saturday.
“You love the chippiness,” he said. “That’s what it’s going to be like on Saturdays, and we’re making each other better.”
Even the leadership dynamic is shifting to match that rugged mentality. Sayin talked about how his voice on this team has grown, and he’s not shy about mixing it up verbally with the defense. It’s a mentality the offensive line has completely bought into. “If the quarterback is out there trash talking the defense, the O-line loves it, and they feed into it.”

With a year of starting experience now behind him, Sayin is setting the standard for toughness. If these first three days are any indication, the Buckeyes are all in on the grit it takes to win at the highest level.
