Week 2 is in the books for Ohio State after a crushing 24-23 loss to the Texas Longhorns.
As the wounds heal and preparation for Kent State begins, let’s take a look at the Buckeye Stock Market. Who is rising and falling for the Buckeyes?
Buckeyes Falling
Arthur Smith
Offensive coordinator Arthur Smith’s unit looked on top of the world after a 56-point campaign against Ball State. Things could not have started better for the Buckeyes against Texas after Jay Timmons recovered a fumble on the very first play of the game. Despite the gift, the Buckeyes settled for three points.
This would go on to be one of many offensive blunders in this one. The conservative play style and lack of urgency ultimately led to the Longhorns coming back and winning. After a second-half collapse, Smith and the offense will need to figure it out quickly before the bulk of the schedule comes.
Connor Hawkins
The Buckeyes added Baylor transfer Connor Hawkins in this year’s cycle to replace Jayden Fielding. Hawkins had a solid two seasons with the Bears, converting nearly 82% of his field goals and never missing an extra point. Hawkins was automatic in last week’s contest, hitting all seven extra point opportunities.
After a 3/3 start, Hawkins failed to convert a 45-yard field goal attempt with 4:21 remaining in the game. The Buckeyes went on to lose by just one point as pressure situations continue to plague Buckeye kickers.
Buckeyes Rising
Riley Pettijohn
Despite not getting the start in this one, Riley Pettijohn is making things interesting after another standout performance. Pettijohn’s Pro Football Focus grade of 69.1 placed him in fourth among Ohio State defenders. Pettijohn converted two tackles including a sack on quarterback Arch Manning.
The Texas native is already off to a great start in his young sophomore season and will only get better as James Laurinaitis looks for his next great linebacker.
Jermaine Mathews Jr.
Jermaine Mathews Jr stood out defensively for the Buckeyes as his senior season gets in full swing. As one of the leaders of the defense, the Buckeyes will look for consistency out of Mathews this year. He had a solid performance against the Longhorns, recording a 70.3 Pro Football Focus grade. Mathews converted four tackles in the contest, including an impact play stopping a 4th down attempt in the backfield.
The Buckeyes take on the Kent State Golden Flashes next weekend at home.
