Three Ohio State Buckeyes emerged as top contributors in a momentous season opening 14-7 victory over the Texas Longhorns.
In a season opener where all eyes were on Lee Corso’s final head gear pick, in a much anticipated matchup against the preseason No. 1 Longhorns, Ohio State leaned on a mix of poise and defensive dominance to kick off its title defense.
Three players quarterback Julian Sayin, linebacker Arvell Reese, and cornerback Jermaine Mathews Jr. emerged as key contributors in the Buckeyes’ 14-7 triumph.
Julian Sayin:
• Completion / Attempts: 13-of-20 (65.0%)
• Passing Yards: 126
• Touchdowns: 1
• Interceptions: 0
• Rating: 134.4
In his first collegiate start, Sayin displayed maturity under the spotlight. His best moment came early in the fourth quarter, connecting with Tate on a 40-yard touchdown that extended Ohio State’s lead to 14-0. Behind a great performance from the offensive line that allowed no sacks, Sayin managed the game efficiently and effectively to win the ball game.
Arvell Reese:
• Tackles: 9 (career-best)
• Sacks: 1 (his first full sack)
• Pass Breakups: 1 (also a personal first)
Reese was a defensive workhorse, making plays sideline to sideline and even rushing the passer effectively. He set the tone early, stuffing Texas on a critical fourth-and-2 on the opening series.
Jermaine Mathews Jr.:
• Tackles: 3
• Interceptions: 1
Mathews delivered a timely turnover in the third quarter, intercepting Arch Manning on a deep attempt and returning it to Ohio State’s 32-yard line and shutting down one more Longhorn threat. His interception was a huge momentum shift. It later factored to end Texas scoring opportunity with a huge pass deflection.
The Buckeyes are back home next week against Grambling State at 3:30 on BTN!
