Former legends for the Ohio State Buckeyes seek their first Super Bowl as Nick Bosa, Chase Young, and the 49ers take on the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
When Super Bowl LVIII kicks off on February 11th, two former Ohio State Buckeye football greats will take the field, seeking their first Super Bowl victories in Las Vegas. Nick Bosa and Chase Young, both former defensive ends for the Scarlet and Gray, are teammates in the league after a midseason trade moved Young from D.C. to the Bay Area.
Their time as Buckeyes was spectacular, as both made massive impacts for the Silver Bullets in their three seasons. Bosa joined the team in 2016 playing three seasons, while Young started his collegiate career in 2017.
Nick came on strong as a freshman, registering 29 tackles, seven tackles for loss, and five sacks. The sophomore stint for Bosa was by far his most impactful, as he played in 14 games throughout the 2017 season. He finished with 34 total tackles, 16 tackles for loss, eight and a half sacks, and two passes defended.
Freshman Chase Young was added to an already elite defensive line unit. He added five tackles for loss and three and a half sacks in nine games of action. During Bosa’s junior campaign in the 2018 season, he played in just three games, registering four sacks, before an injury that led to him missing the rest of the season. This is where Young started elevating his game as he had 34 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, and 10.5 sacks during the season.
In 2019, Nick Bosa left for the NFL, and Chase Young wrapped up his Ohio State career in an elite, all-time season for the Buckeyes. Young earned an invite to New York City for the Heisman Trophy ceremony, along with teammate Justin Fields. In 12 games, Young totaled 46 tackles, 21 tackles for loss, and an astounding 16.5 sacks.
Nick Bosa was taken with the second pick in the 2019 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, where he has been ever since. Chase Young was selected in the same spot the following year by the Washington Football Team.
Both have had some success in the league, however, Bosa is the more decorated player statistically. Bosa has 53.5 sacks and three fumble recoveries in five seasons (missed 2020 due to injury). Young has also missed time in the league and only played in three games during the 2022 season. He has 16.5 sacks and six forced fumbles as a pro.
The teammates who spent two full seasons together in Columbus reunited for the back half of the NFL season. With just one game remaining, both can add Super Bowl champions to their impressive resumes. Whether a fan of the Chiefs, 49ers, or a team not in the game, Ohio State fans will see their guys running after Patrick Mahomes and reminisce about some amazing memories with the Scarlet and Gray.
