Ohio State Women’s Basketball: Buckeyes Set to Battle North Carolina in Round of 32

The Ohio State women’s basketball team is set to battle North Carolina at The Schottenstein Center in Columbus in the Round of 32 this afternoon at 4:00pm on ESPN. A spot in the Sweet 16 is on the line, a round that the Buckeyes have made three times (but never advanced past) since Kevin McGuff took over as head coach in 2013.

Ohio State raced off to a 19-0 start before a late January skid, but rallied to turn back the season around before reaching the finals of the Big Ten Tournament. In their first round matchup against 14-seed James Madison, the 3-seeded Buckeyes struggled and were trailing at halftime before ultimately pulling out the victory. The Buckeyes shot just 2-17 (12%) on threes, and will surely have to be better than that today against North Carolina to end up with another win.

The Buckeyes are led by a three-headed offensive attack, mainly spearheaded by veteran guards Jacy Sheldon and Taylor Mikesell, with star freshman forward Cotie McMahon making up the final piece of the puzzle. Other important pieces include center Rebeka Mikulasikova and guard Rikki Harris.

North Carolina advanced in the tournament by knocking off 11-seeded St. Johns 61-59 after a converted three-point play by Deja Kelly with two seconds remaining in the game.

If Ohio State were to knock off the Tar Heels, they would battle the winner of a powerhouse matchup between Baylor and UConn. That game will tip-off at 9:00pm tonight. ]
