BOOM! Four-Star Cornerback Calvin Simpson-Hunt Commits to Ohio State

Ohio State is reloading their defensive backs room once again.

The Buckeyes have added a third cornerback to their 2023 class as Tim Walton and Perry Eliano have successfully flipped Waxahachie (Texas) cornerback Calvin Simpson-Hunt from Texas Tech to Ohio State.

Simpson-Hunt is rated as the No. 173 overall prospect in the 2023 class, the No. 16 cornerback, and the No. 30 player from the state of Texas. He joins Florida’s Dijon Johnson and Georgia’s Kayin Lee as defensive backs currently pledged to Ohio State’s 2023 class, which has received significant momentum as of late with the commitments of three elite wide receivers (plus Lee) within the last week.

Standing 6’0 and 175 pounds, Simpson-Hunt’s recruitment has blown up as of late, with Oklahoma, Alabama, Texas, and Ohio State all offering since the beginning of May. He took a visit to the Red Raiders last week, and Ohio State the week before that, but evidently the pitch of Walton and Eliano was enough to sway him off a commitment he made to Texas Tech on Nov. 1 of 2021. It appeared that Texas Tech had successfully held on to the pledge of Simpson-Hunt as recently as yesterday, but the pull of the Buckeyes was too much for Joey McGuire to handle.

Ohio State’s 2023 class now features 16 commits and is ranked No. 1 in the country. The Buckeyes also have the highest average-per-recruit ranking, narrowly ahead of Georgia and USC.

The Buckeyes are not expected to be done addressing the defensive backfield, despite having three committed players. Stay tuned to The Silver Bulletin for the latest Ohio State recruiting news.
