Ohio State Guard Meechie Johnson Enters Transfer Portal

Meechie Johnson has officially entered the transfer portal and will test the college basketball market. He does so after spending just two years with the Ohio State program after entering as an early enrollee in 2020.

Johnson elected to forgo his senior year at Garfield Heights High School, near Cleveland, to enroll early at Ohio State. He saw action in 17 games during the 2020-21 campaign and made his debut against Rutgers on January 9th, 2021. During this season he went 6 of 12 from behind the arc while averaging about 6 minutes per game.

The Buckeye coaching staff was hopeful for a breakout performance from Meechie in his first full season with the program. However, a facial injury and a bum ankle combined with the program’s overall issues led to a less than satisfying result. In 26 games, Meechie played about 17 minutes per game and added 4.4 points and 1.2 assists per contest.

Meechie’s entering of the portal certainly doesn’t guarantee his exit from the program as he could return at any time. However, Ohio State does boast a Top-5 recruiting class nationally in 2022 that includes Gatorade Player of the Year and the #1 player in Georgia, Guard Bruce Thornton. The class also includes two other premier guards in Roddy Gayle Jr. and Bowen Hardman.

Rumored landing spots for the talented guard are Memphis and Arizona State.
