Saturday Cadence Week 9 Reaction: Texas A&M Stuns LSU in Death Valley as Brian Kelly Is Fired

Texas A&M dominates LSU in Death Valley, leading to Brian Kelly’s firing as the Tigers’ head coach. We break down LSU’s next moves, top coaching candidates, Alabama’s narrow escape vs. South Carolina, big wins from Ole Miss, and why Washington and Iowa deserve to be ranked in our Week 9 college football recap.

Texas A&M went into Death Valley and dismantled LSU in a performance that sent shockwaves through the SEC and ultimately cost Brian Kelly his job. The Aggies dominated from start to finish, controlling both lines of scrimmage and making LSU’s offense look lifeless in front of its home crowd.

Mike Elko has the Aggies playing inspired, physical football. Texas A&M’s defensive front smothered LSU’s run game and forced multiple turnovers, setting the tone early and never looking back. Meanwhile, the Aggie offense executed with confidence, mixing tempo and power to create explosive plays all afternoon.

For LSU, the Kelly era ends abruptly and disappointingly. After inheriting a talented roster and promising trajectory, the Tigers never quite found their identity under his leadership. LSU has too much pride, too much talent, and too much history to settle for mediocrity, especially when programs like Georgia, Alabama, and Texas are elevating the standard.

In Tuscaloosa, Alabama escaped with a narrow win over South Carolina, a reminder that even the Tide can get rattled. The Gamecocks threw everything they had at Kalen DeBoer’s squad, but championship poise won out late. Alabama’s defense made clutch stops down the stretch, and the running game helped salt away a tense fourth quarter.

It wasn’t pretty, but at this point in the season, survival counts. And Alabama still controls its destiny in the SEC.

Outside the SEC, Washington continues to prove it belongs in the playoff conversation. The Huskies’ offense remains among the best in the nation, and their ability to win close games is impressive. On the other side of the country, Iowa quietly keeps stacking wins with an elite defense and disciplined play. It’s not flashy, but it’s effective, and both teams deserve to be in the national rankings conversation.

Lane Kiffin and the Rebels added another key victory to their resume, staying alive in the SEC chase. Ole Miss continues to show balance, aggressive offense paired with timely defense, and this win keeps them in striking distance for a major bowl game.

Week 9 delivered everything we love about college football: drama, upsets, emotion, and shifting narratives. Texas A&M reasserted itself as a program on the rise, LSU hit reset, Alabama survived, and the national picture got even tighter.

As November approaches, the contenders are separating from the pretenders, and every Saturday feels like a playoff game.
