Saturday Cadence Week 8 Reaction: Florida Fires Napier, Alabama Dominates, and Ohio State Stands Alone

Florida fires Billy Napier, Alabama dominates Tennessee, Georgia outlasts Ole Miss, Notre Dame crushes USC, and Ohio State stands tall.

College football delivered another unforgettable weekend, filled with statement wins, shocking upsets, and the season’s next major coaching casualty. As the dust settles, the nation’s landscape is beginning to take shape, and one team stands clearly above the rest.

The biggest headline of the weekend came from Gainesville, where Florida officially parted ways with head coach Billy Napier. The move felt inevitable. The Gators have struggled to find consistency under Napier.

The firing signals Florida’s intent to reset its identity. Recruiting momentum has faded, the on-field product has stalled, and fan patience has evaporated. Expect names like James Franklin, Ole Miss’s Lane Kiffin, and others to surface in early replacement conversations.

Florida’s next hire is critical, miss again, and the Gators risk falling permanently behind Georgia, Alabama, and even programs like Tennessee and Ole Miss in the SEC hierarchy.

The Crimson Tide dominated Tennessee in Tuscaloosa, controlling the game from start to finish with suffocating defense and physical offensive line play.

Ty Simpson has steadily matured, giving Alabama the stability it lacked early in the year. DeBoer’s team is rounding into form at exactly the right time, efficient, disciplined, and beginning to look like the Alabama of old. If the Tide keeps this up, they’ll be a legitimate threat to the College Football Playoff party once again.

In Athens, Georgia outlasted a tough Ole Miss squad in a physical SEC slugfest. Kirby Smart’s Bulldogs continue to show their championship pedigree, finding ways to win even when not firing on all cylinders.

Notre Dame delivered a statement victory, dismantling USC in South Bend. The Irish ran wild, exposing a Trojan defense that continues to be Lincoln Riley’s Achilles heel.

Notre Dame, meanwhile, reasserted itself as a physical, well-coached team capable of beating anyone when playing to its identity.

Louisville stunned Miami in one of the weekend’s biggest upsets, proving the Cardinals are legitimate contenders in the ACC. Jeff Brohm’s team continues to win with discipline and balance, and they now have a clear path toward a New Year’s Six bowl appearance.

For Miami, the questions persist. The Hurricanes are talented, but inconsistency and late-game execution have haunted them in the past. Are those issues resurfacing? Mario Cristobal’s rebuild remains a work in progress, but patience in South Florida is wearing thin.

In the Big Ten, Nebraska fell to Minnesota in a battle that underscored the Huskers’ ongoing offensive struggles. Matt Rhule’s culture shift is happening, but results are coming slowly.

Meanwhile, Vanderbilt continues its shocking climb into the Top 10. The Commodores have found an identity rooted in fundamentals and belief led by QB Diego Pavia. It’s one of the sport’s most unlikely and inspiring stories this season.

And then there’s Ohio State.

The Buckeyes are the best team in the country, and it’s not particularly close. Ryan Day’s squad has completely transformed its identity. Once known for explosive offense, Ohio State now wins with elite defense and relentless physicality.

Defensive Coordinator Matt Patricia has built a unit that dominates every level of the field. From Sonny Styles and Arvell Reese to Caleb Downs and Davison Igbinosun in the secondary, this defense is suffocating.

Combine that with Julian Sayin’s Heisman-worthy season, and the Buckeyes look like the most complete team in college football. Their balance, discipline, and depth give them a championship ceiling, and a steady confidence that separates them from the chaos consuming everyone else.
