Saturday Cadence breaks down Week 1 as Ohio State, Florida State, LSU, and Miami deliver statement wins in playoff-level atmospheres.
Week 1 of the college football season lived up to the hype and then some. Fans got a taste of playoff-caliber atmospheres right out of the gate with Ohio State vs. Texas, LSU vs. Clemson, and Notre Dame vs. Miami.
On the latest episode of Saturday Cadence, host Blake Biscardi breaks down the weekend’s biggest games, key takeaways, and what it all means moving forward.
Ohio State Outlasts Texas in Defensive Showcase
In front of an electric Horseshoe crowd, Ohio State edged Texas 14-7 in a game defined by defense, physicality, and fourth-down stops.
Arch Manning struggled mightily against Matt Patricia’s NFL-influenced defensive scheme, completing just 17 of 30 passes for 170 yards with one touchdown and an interception. The Buckeyes disguised coverages, brought disguised pressure, and rattled the Texas quarterback all afternoon.
On the other side, freshman quarterback Julian Sayin was steady in his first start. Ryan Day and the Buckeyes kept the game plan conservative, relying on short throws and rhythm passes. Sayin delivered the game’s signature moment with a 40-yard strike to Carnell Tate in the fourth quarter.
The true difference? Execution inside the five-yard line. Ohio State converted its lone chance on a C.J. Donaldson touchdown, while Texas failed multiple times in goal-to-go situations. The Buckeye defense stood tall on fourth down, the stat of the day: Texas went just 1-for-5.
Ryan Day now boasts seven straight wins over top-10 opponents. A run that cements his place among college football’s elite coaches.
Florida State Stuns Alabama
Perhaps the biggest surprise came in Tallahassee, where Florida State dominated Alabama 31-17. Quarterback Tommy Castellanos, the Boston College transfer, backed up his summer confidence by accounting for over 230 total yards and leading the Seminoles with poise.
Mike Norvell’s squad was physical in the trenches, something rarely said about a team playing Alabama. Florida State rushed for 230 yards and converted both of its fourth-down attempts, while holding the Crimson Tide to just 2-for-5 in those situations.
This was the program’s biggest win in years, signaling a potential ACC title run. It also raises fresh questions about how quickly Kalen DeBoer can build post-Saban Alabama into a consistent contender.
LSU Finally Gets Its Week One Win
Brian Kelly and LSU delivered the program’s first opening-week victory since 2019, outlasting Clemson 17-10 in the Battle of Death Valleys.
Quarterback Garrett Nussmeier played efficiently, but the real story was the Tiger defense. LSU held Clemson to just 31 rushing yards and 1.6 yards per carry.
For Clemson, the issues looked familiar. Cade Klubnik and Garrett Riley’s offense stalled once again in a big spot, leaving Dabo Swinney’s team searching for answers if they hope to return to national title contention.
Miami Sends a Message Against Notre Dame
Late-night action in South Florida produced another statement as Miami beat Notre Dame 27-20. The Hurricanes were physical at the line of scrimmage and showed off playmakers on offense, including standout receiver C.J. Daniels, whose one-handed touchdown grab was one of the weekend’s highlights.
Notre Dame showed resilience behind true freshman quarterback CJ Carr, but questions remain about the offensive game plan after limited touches for running backs Jeremiyah Love and Jadarian Price. Miami, meanwhile, looks ready to insert itself firmly into the ACC title race.

A Fond Farewell to Lee Corso
Amid the fireworks on the field, week one also marked the end of an era. College football icon Lee Corso made his final College GameDay picks, going a perfect 6-0.
From picking his beloved Brutus to cap off Ohio State’s win over Texas, to lone-wolfing Florida State over Alabama, Corso reminded fans why he has been the heartbeat of Saturday mornings for more than 30 years. College football won’t look the same without him, but his legacy will live on for generations.
But as Blake reminds listeners, the golden rule of early-season football is simple: “Don’t overreact. Don’t justify.”
Teams will evolve, young quarterbacks will grow, and the playoff picture will shift dramatically in the weeks ahead.
