Jake Diebler wants John Mobley Jr. to improve his game management as Ohio State prepares to start the basketball season.
The Buckeyes’ head coach has challenged the sophomore guard to balance his scoring with better decision-making, especially when attacking the paint, creating opportunities for teammates, and reading the flow of a possession.
“I’ve really been challenging Juni to manage the game. I think that’s the big thing,” Diebler said.
Mobley has the ability to create offense, but Diebler wants him to recognize when to score and when to involve his teammates. The goal is to make better decisions based on what each possession requires.
“I’ve told him now being a kind of quote-unquote gunslinger, I guess, isn’t always the answer,” Diebler said.
Jake Diebler Wants John Mobley Jr. to Improve His Decision-Making
Diebler’s challenge centers on Mobley’s ability to read the defense and make the right play. Rather than relying on his scoring instincts in every situation, Mobley must recognize when attacking the basket can create opportunities for Ohio State’s offense.
“Sometimes it doesn’t mean you’ve got to get to the paint and either kick it to someone else to get to the free throw line versus what I call settling because of how good of a player he is, right, and understanding the flow of the game and what’s required in that moment,” Diebler said.
Diebler wants Mobley to understand how his decisions affect a possession. Getting into the paint can put pressure on the defense, but the next read matters. Mobley must determine whether to finish, pass to an open teammate, or find another way to create a scoring opportunity.
That balance will be important as Ohio State develops its offensive identity. Diebler has emphasized growth throughout November and December, especially with a roster that includes several players with limited college experience.
For Mobley, managing the game means using his scoring ability within the offense while recognizing when another option gives the Buckeyes a better opportunity.

Diebler Praises Mobley’s Basketball IQ and Work Ethic
Diebler believes Mobley has the qualities needed to improve his decision-making.
“He’s a student of the game. He’s got a really high basketball IQ. He works so hard,” Diebler said.
The coach also noted that Mobley spends significant time in the gym and continues to develop his understanding of the game. Diebler acknowledged that managing possessions in this way represents an adjustment for the sophomore guard.
Mobley has worked on that part of his game throughout October, and Diebler has seen progress during that period.
“And I think this October has been a great month of growth for him in that area. And now we’ve got to realize that here moving forward,” Diebler said. The next step is carrying those improvements into games.
What Is John Mobley Jr.’s Role for Ohio State?
Mobley’s development as a decision-maker will be part of Ohio State’s early-season progress. Diebler has said the team must continue improving while preparing to win, placing an emphasis on execution as the Buckeyes build experience.
For Mobley, that means knowing when to attack, when to create for teammates, and how to respond to the defense. Diebler wants him to maintain his offensive aggression while making decisions that serve the team.
Diebler’s message is straightforward: Mobley must learn to manage the game, and the improvements he has made in practice need to translate to competition.
