With a slew of storms rolling through Columbus this morning, day two of fall camp was moved entirely indoors. That didn’t slow attendance down one bit, however, as it was a packed Woody Hayes Athletic Center.

 

Early on in practice, OSU began working on punts and punt returns. What immediately caught the eye of most everyone there was the fact that Jeremiah Smith was one of the dedicated returners. It is of course early on in camp, but the prospect of Smith using his athleticism in the return game is certainly something to consider.

However, another receiver made his presence known and that receiver was Devin McCuin. The speedy transfer is expected to make a major impact mainly in the slot role. With that being said, Devin was making plays sideline to sideline today. He racked up handful of catches downfield against multiple secondary looks. One reception stood out above the rest as McCuin made an impressive over the shoulder grab in the corner of the end-zone that had the building in awe. With the receiver depth being something in question, look for him to perhaps come out of the fold as an impact on offense.

Julian Sayin and Jeremiah Smith had what seems to be a bit of an off day. They had miscommunications on multiple occasions that led to errand throws from Sayin. The two were mature about handling the situation as they got together each time to hash things out. Coach Day was understandably frustrated and had to get involved in the conversations by the end of practice. Being so early, this comes with the territory between a reviver and his QB. I wouldn’t expect the issues to persist much further into fall.

The final observation from today was the trenches. Both sides of the line were throwing haymakers much of the practice. The Offensive line, particularly at the Tackle positions, appeared to be holding a solid advantage. Kenyatta Jackson was able to find his way in the backfield on multiple occasions and pressure up the middle from Eddrick Houston seemed to force the offense to flush the ball out wide more than once.

When the ball was being flushed out, it was most often to Isaiah West. West has been a pleasant surprise not just in the running game but the passing game as well. His health and explosiveness has never been better, as highlighted by Ryan Day in his day one media availability. The running back room is chock full of versatility. It will be interesting to see how that room is handled moving forward.

With so much talent and competition on either side, the battle between the lines is an intriguing one to watch. All in all, the Buckeyes made strides today and with the return of Legend Bey tomorrow, there should be another layer to watch on offense. As the preseason No.1 team in the country according to the Coaches Poll, the pressure has only increased to shore up the depth chart come September.
