Ohio State DL James Smith met with the media for the first time as a Buckeye on Thursday, March 26, 2025. Smith details his decision to transfer from Alabama to Ohio State, and what the process was like for him, and how Caleb Downs played an integral part. Notably, Smith referred to Downs as his “brother” and said the two talk all the time.

Additionally, Smith discusses his expectations for the upcoming season and how he will impact Ohio State’s defensive line and overall defense. Smith said he is working on his three-technique and will look to play some nose tackle this season in an effort to help replace Kayden McDonald.

DC Matt Patricia

Ohio State defensive coordinator Matt Patricia met with the media for the second day in a row. Yesterday, discussing Pro Day, and today talking about the 2026 Buckeyes, his contract extension, and decision to remain in Columbus, as well as what to expect from this year’s unit and new faces.

Matt Patricia on his decision to stay with the Buckeyes: “Ohio State is such a special place. Not only just the history, the tradition, the football program, the school, but the people that are here.” Patricia also said Columbus feels like home.
