Spring practice is underway for the Ohio State football team, and many returning pieces are preparing to take on the challenge of replacing the talent lost to the NFL Draft.

The first week of spring practice has come to a close, and many Buckeyes are gearing up to take over this season. Returning stars such as Jeremiah Smith, Julian Sayin, and Jaylen McClain will look to pick up right where they left off. But others will look to come out with a clean slate and chase the opportunities created by key departures. It’s next man up in Columbus, and these men are ready to take on the challenge.

Isaiah West

Isaiah West is a player who began turning heads as the 2025 season progressed. The running back began his true freshman year with just over 100 rushing yards in the first two months of the season before bursting onto the scene and rushing for over 200 yards in November. West will look to shine alongside Bo Jackson, following the departure of James Peoples, who transferred to Penn State.

West is currently recovering from surgery and will not be active throughout spring practice. The backfield will also include Turbo Rodgers, Legend Bey, Favour Akih, and Ja’Kobi Jackson.

Nate Roberts

Nate Roberts enters his sophomore season with expectations of taking on the lead role in the tight end room. Roberts’ role fluctuated throughout last season, but he was often seen taking on the fullback position. Now, with Max Klare, Jelani Thurman, and Will Kacmarek departing, Roberts will look to increase his role both as a blocker and a receiver.

In addition, offensive coordinator and playcaller Arthur Smith is notorious for relying heavily on tight ends, which should give Roberts the boost he needs to be successful. Roberts will compete with transfers Mason Williams and Hunter Welcing. Bennett Christian will also return, along with Brody Lennon, Max LeBlanc, and Nick Lautar.

Kenyatta Jackson Jr

Kenyatta Jackson returns to Ohio State for his 5th season and a chance to work on all facets of his game. Jackson Jr spoke to the media following practice and added, I wanted to come back and become a more complete player,” Jackson said. The Florida native waited his turn, and it paid off after being named a starter before the beginning of last season and converting 28 tackles and 6.5 sacks.

Now, Jackson will look to improve even more before heading to the NFL. Standing at 6-foot-6 and weighing 265 pounds, Jackson possesses all of the physical tools needed to be elite. One more season under Larry Johnson and Matt Patricia should allow Jackson to become an elite pass rusher.

Riley Pettijohn

Riley Pettijohn returns for his sophomore season and has a chance to compete for a starting role. Pettijohn showed flashes of his potential in many instances throughout last season while sitting behind Sonny Styles and Arvell Reese. Now, Pettijohn will look to become the next great linebacker under James Laurinaitis. The Texas native possesses all of the elite traits needed to be a star, and Buckeyes fans should expect to hear his name called many times in 2026. Pettijohn will also miss spring while dealing with an injury.

The Ohio State football team will continue its second week of Spring practice next week after the university’s break. Ryan Day and his staff are working hard to make improvements as spring progresses. A lot is riding on this season, and the proper changes will need to be made if the Buckeyes want to return to the National Championship game next season.
