Ohio State 2027 recruiting mailbag and key updates on committed and uncommitted prospects as the official visit season nears an end.

The summer recruiting season is heating up, and Ohio State finds itself in the middle of several key storylines within the 2027 class. From high-profile targets nearing important decisions to committed prospects continuing to strengthen their ties with the Buckeyes, there’s plenty of movement behind the scenes.

While some recruitments appear to be coming into focus, others remain far from settled, with visits, relationships, and upcoming developments still poised to shape the class. In this mailbag, we’ll dive into the latest buzz surrounding Ohio State’s top targets, current commits, and a handful of recruitments that could become major storylines in the months ahead.

Committed Prospects:

David Jacobs – Five Star Edge

Jacobs returns to campus this weekend, and that’s a significant development for Ohio State. He’s been a name many around the recruiting world have circled as a potential flip candidate, but the Buckeyes continue to feel good about where they stand. From what I’ve heard, Ohio State is comfortable with the trajectory of this recruitment, and getting Jacobs back on campus for his official visit should only strengthen those relationships.

Barring a major surprise, I don’t see much reason for concern after this weekend. In fact, this visit could go a long way toward reinforcing his commitment and solidifying Ohio State’s position moving forward.

Jamier Brown – Five Star WR

Brown has shut down his recruitment and will take only one official visit (Ohio State). That decision speaks volumes about where things stand, as he has fully solidified his place in the Buckeyes’ 2027 class. Brown remains one of the cornerstone prospects in the group, and his continued commitment gives Ohio State a strong foundation to build around as the class continues to take shape.

Brady Edmunds – Four Star QB

Edmunds did take an official visit to UCLA last weekend and is expected back on campus next week for his official visit to Ohio State. This is shaping up to be an important stretch in his recruitment, with momentum likely to pick up once that visit cycle wraps. From what I’ve heard, Ohio State is still working to keep him firmly in this class, especially after not gaining much traction with other quarterback targets they’ve explored. The Buckeyes are expected to stay aggressive here, and the next few days should provide a clearer picture of where things are headed.

Offensive Line Unit

Kellen Wymer, Jimmy Kalis, Brody McNeel, Davis Seaman, and Mason Wilt will all be back on campus this weekend for their official visits, joined by Ohio State’s top remaining offensive line target, Caden Moss. At this point, this group has done as much recruiting as the coaching staff, consistently staying in contact and working to bring more talent into the class.

The bond between these future Buckeyes is already strong, and this weekend gives them another opportunity to continue building the foundation of what could be a special offensive line group in Columbus. Expect plenty of peer recruiting efforts directed toward Moss as Ohio State looks to put the finishing touches on an already impressive haul up front.

Uncommitted Prospects:

David Gabriel Georges – Five Star RB

I’ve been closely tied to this recruitment for years, and heading into the official visit stretch, Tennessee would have been considered the leader. However, following those visits, I’ve been told this one has shifted into a true 50/50 battle by sources very close to the situation regarding David Gabriel Georges. The relationship with Coach Locklyn is strong on the Ohio State side, but it may not be enough on its own to separate either program right now.

One thing that needs to be made clear is that some of the NIL numbers circulating are inaccurate and are not a deciding factor for either Ohio State or Tennessee in this recruitment. This one is going to come down to relationships, fit, and long-term trust. At this point, it feels like a tight race that could very well go all the way to decision day, and it may take a signature late push from Ryan Day to finish this one off, similar to past closing efforts on top targets like Chris Henry Jr. last cycle.

Marcus Fakatou – Five Star DL

Marcus Fakatou has now released a top group of Ohio State, Texas, and Georgia, a significant development that reshapes what was previously thought to be a wider and more fluid recruitment. Notre Dame had long been viewed as one of the primary threats here, but the focus has now clearly shifted to this final trio of national powers.

Texas is making a strong push and is expected to continue exploring ways to stay in the race through NIL and relationship building, but Ohio State is firmly positioned after an extremely strong official visit. The relationships built in Columbus, combined with how comfortable he felt within the program’s vision, have the Buckeyes in a very strong spot. At this stage, Ohio State has as good a chance as anyone and may ultimately be the team to beat heading into decision day.

Caden Moss – Four Star OL

Caden Moss is on campus this weekend alongside Ohio State’s current offensive line commits, giving him a close look at the culture and connection already forming within the class. He represents the final major target that Coach Bowen is actively pursuing along the offensive line in this cycle, making this visit an important one for both sides.

The Mississippi native is viewed as a highly versatile lineman who can play multiple spots across the front, which is a big part of why he remains such a priority. While Ole Miss has held a strong position in his recruitment, this official visit could shift his perspective as he gets a firsthand look at what Ohio State offers on and off the field. The Buckeyes will look to make a strong impression and show him exactly how he could fit into their long-term plans up front.

Jaden Carey – Four Star CB

Jaden Carey recently wrapped up his official visit to Ohio State, and all signs continue to point in a very strong direction for the Buckeyes. His recruitment has been trending positively toward Columbus for some time now, and that momentum only strengthened after the visit.

As part of the SFE pipeline that Ohio State has leaned into in recent cycles, Carey is viewed as a prospect who can fill a key positional need in this class if things come together as expected. The Florida native fits both the athletic profile and long-term developmental vision the staff is targeting, and there is growing confidence that this is a recruitment to watch closely as a potential Buckeye commitment in the near future.

Kaylon Bailey – Four Star LB

Bailey, the Glenville product, has long been viewed as a natural fit for Ohio State, and that perception still holds strong among many around the program. In previous years, this would have been considered a straightforward, “slam dunk” type of recruitment for the Buckeyes, but in today’s landscape, even those traditional pipeline alignments require continued effort to secure.

Bailey profiles as the type of physical, high-upside defender Ohio State has prioritized, drawing comparisons to impact in-state additions like Arvell Reese in terms of trajectory and long-term potential. He’s the kind of prospect Buckeye fans should be excited about, not just because of where he’s from, but because of what he can develop into within the system if Ohio State closes this one out.

Benny Easter Jr. – Five Star WR

Easter Jr. is currently committed to Texas Tech, but he continues to be heavily pursued by Ohio State, with Coach Hankton leading the charge on the Buckeyes’ side. This is shaping up to be one of those recruitments to monitor closely, especially as Ohio State evaluates how the wide receiver board ultimately comes together in this cycle.

If the Buckeyes are able to gain real traction here, it would be a significant addition to the class, given his upside and fit within the offensive system. Expect his name to continue generating buzz as the season approaches and the picture of Ohio State’s full wide receiver group becomes clearer.

Monsanna Tolbert – Four Star CB

Monsanna Tolbert is currently on his official visit in Columbus, and this is a key opportunity for Ohio State as Coach Tim Walton continues to push aggressively in his recruitment. The Cincinnati native was previously committed to Indiana, but his recruitment has clearly taken a turn with the Buckeyes now firmly involved.

Tolbert projects as a versatile nickel defender, the type of player who could thrive in a role similar to what Ohio State has developed with guys like Jordan Hancock. This visit is an important one for the Buckeyes to reinforce that vision and show how he could be utilized early in their defensive system.

Deontay Malone – Four Star CB

Deontay Malone, another in-state Ohio prospect with a much bigger frame, continues to trend strongly toward Ohio State, with the Buckeyes viewed as the current leader in his recruitment. This official visit to Columbus is an important opportunity to further solidify that momentum and reinforce his fit within the program’s long-term plans.

Pittsburgh is another program to keep an eye on here, but Ohio State has done a strong job positioning itself throughout the process. There is growing confidence that the Buckeyes remain in a very good spot, and this visit could go a long way toward locking things in as Malone continues to evaluate his options. At this stage, Ohio State looks like the team to beat in his recruitment.

Blake Wong – Four Star WR

Blake Wong, the West Coast track standout, is quickly becoming a name to watch in this recruitment cycle as he continues to draw strong interest from Utah, BYU, and UCLA. Ohio State remains firmly in the mix as well and will get the final official visit next weekend, which could prove to be a major swing moment in his recruitment.

Coach Hankton is especially high on Wong’s upside and versatility, and there’s a clear expectation that the Buckeyes will be aggressive in how they approach this visit. With his track speed translating to the football field, he’s the type of prospect Ohio State is eager to develop, and this OV is shaping up to be an opportunity for the staff to really make their full pitch.

As this stretch of official visits comes to a close, Ohio State appears more selective and intentional about who they are bringing in, creating a clearer overall picture of how the 2027 class could ultimately come together. The Buckeyes are targeting specific fits rather than casting a wide net, and that approach is starting to show in how the board is shaping up across each position group.

With a better sense of priorities and where they stand with key targets, the outlook for this class feels more defined and easier to project than it did earlier in the cycle. Now it comes down to closing the right remaining pieces and finishing strong with the group already in place.
