Ohio State Basketball: John Mobley Jr. Ties Career High, Buckeyes Dominate Nittany Lions

Behind John Mobley’s 28 Points, Ohio State walked into Happy Valley and dominated the Nittany Lions for 40 minutes to continue its hot streak.

The Buckeyes come into this matchup with Penn State riding high off an upset victory last Sunday against the Purdue Boilermakers. Jake Diebler’s team is the healthiest it has been, with Puff Johnson being the only new player to appear on the injury list, alongside Brandon Noel, who has been speculated to return before the end of the season. Penn State is without star freshman Kayden Mingo, who was injured in Penn State’s upset victory against Iowa this past Saturday.

Ohio State came into this matchup the healthiest they have been in several weeks. This showed as John Mobley and Amare Bynum connected with a low-post layup, and the possession ended with a Bruce Thornton corner three to give the Buckeyes an early lead against the Nittany Lions.

The story of this game was the ability to continue being consistent after a huge win against Purdue. John Mobley didn’t miss a beat as he would drill a deep three-pointer, which was followed by a Christoph Tilly layup to put Ohio State up 12-9 at the twelve-minute mark.

Ohio State’s offense continued to dominate the Penn State defense, going on an 11-0 run during a five-minute span from the under-twelve timeout to around the seven-minute mark in the first half. John Mobley and Bruce Thornton both connected with three-pointers, with Devin Royal and Christoph Tilly adding six points of their own to give Ohio State a 23-9 lead at the seven-minute mark in the first half.

During a Mike Rhoades timeout, Jake Diebler told his team to stay focused and continue playing consistent basketball. The Buckeyes would continue answer by piling points onto a Penn State team that didn’t have a made field goal for 12 minutes. It was a shared load in the first half, with every starter making several baskets on the 21-2 run that ended after Penn State made their first field goal in a 13-minute drought, which cut their deficit to 24 points.

Bruce Thornton shot a perfect 100% from the field during the half, and John Mobley would add to it by shooting 4-5 from deep as the Buckeyes took a 45-21 halftime lead.

Ohio State continued its offensive masterclass in the second half, scoring 15 points on 100% field goal shooting in the first five minutes. Devin Royal, Amare Bynum, and Christoph Tilly continued playing their best all-around game of the season as they dominated the glass and the paint.

This is the game Ohio State needed to come out and play after such an outstanding home victory. It has long been known in college basketball that once a team wins a big victory, they do not take the next opponent as seriously.

Ohio State dominated the game, and the second half was much like the first half, all Ohio State. John Mobley and Bruce Thornton dominated, once again combining for 46 points. The team shot 66.7% from the field, the best this season in a single game.

The Buckeyes were too much for Penn State to handle, as the Nittany Lions fell to 12-18 on the season and 3-16 in conference play.

John Mobley Jr lit the game on fire, as he went 8/9 from deep and tied his career high in 28 points. The sophomore shot 89% from the three-point line, which ranks 6th in Buckeye history. He has the highest percentage that isn’t 100% since 2014. Mobley’s 8 three pointers puts him fourth all-time in single-game three-pointers made; he now ties Jon Diebler and Doug Etzler. The team shot 16/23 from behind the arc; their 69.6% from the three-point line tonight ranks fourth-best in Buckeye history.

Ohio State improves its record to 19-11 and 11-8 in conference play as it looks ahead to Saturday night against Indiana, a game with a lot on the line. Bruce Thornton scored 18 points tonight, which puts him only 12 points shy of breaking the Ohio State All-Time scoring record. He will look to break the historic record on his senior night, and his last time playing in front of the home fans.
