Ohio State and Wisconsin are set to battle in Columbus, with NCAA Tournament hopes hanging in the balance. Jake Diebler anticipates that his Buckeyes will respond well and be ready for the challenge.

The next two weeks of Ohio State basketball will be a major test to see if the Buckeyes can sneak into the NCAA Tournament. All six of Ohio State’s matchups are quad one and two games, which would be major resume builders for Selection Sunday. The Buckeyes will be without John Mobley Jr once again due to an undisclosed hand injury he suffered against USC.

Last time Ohio State and Wisconsin faced off, Wisconsin pulled off a ten-point victory in Madison behind 43 points from John Blackwell and Nick Boyd.

Jake Diebler, in his weekly press conference, would have a simple five-word statement: “We have to get better.” When describing what Ohio State needs to do after losing a heartbreaker in Nashville Saturday night. This final stretch is important in many different ways. The Silver Bulletin’s own Blake Biscardi reported earlier during Jake Diebler’s media call how big this final stretch of the season is in Coach Diebler’s eyes

Wisconsin is a very slow-paced team whose offense can spark at any moment. They scored 92 in the first meeting as the Buckeyes were unable to handle the ball as they would have liked. Wisconsin finished with sixteen assists, while Ohio State had nine. John Mobley Jr went cold from the field in Madison, which allowed Taison Chatman to see his first major minutes in a Buckeye jersey. He finished with fourteen points off the bench and helped provide a huge spark in the Ohio State offense. This time around, he will start alongside Bruce Thornton with the task of guarding one of the Badgers’ two explosive guards.

The Badgers capitalized on the Buckeyes’ mistakes with sixteen points coming off turnovers. Tuesday’s game needs Bruce Thornton and Devin Royal to show their experience playing in meaningful Big Ten end-of-season games. Most media outlets have pushed Ohio State off the bubble and have already written their end-of-season recaps. But Jake Diebler is only focused on Wisconsin. “There’s no hiding how meaningful these games are, and right now, Wisconsin is our sole focus. We’re playing for a lot right now.”

These games are where stars are made; both teams are fighting for something in this game. Wisconsin just entered the AP top twenty-five this week at No. 24, so they are now playing to keep a spot in the rankings. Ohio State needs this win to keep its hopes alive for an NCAA Tournament bid. They are either in the last four in or first four out category at the time of this article.

This time around, the Buckeyes have home-court advantage. Buckeye Nation has shown support for the team all season, even when it has not been able to close key games. Bruce Thornton is playing some of his best basketball of the season, coming off a twenty-eight-point performance in Nashville. Someone else needs to step up for the Buckeyes to pull off their first top twenty-five-ranked victory of the season.

The coaching staff has made it known that they believe the same thing about someone else stepping up when Thornton is not on his game.

The Buckeyes have yet to lose back-to-back games this season. When asked about the possibility, Coach Diebler has no doubts that this team is ready for the matchup with Wisconsin. Jake Diebler has not lost confidence in his team for the last two seasons as the Head Coach for Ohio State, giving 110% effort up until the final buzzer. It will be important on Tuesday night for the team to show the same mindset against a Badgers team that is looking to crush Ohio State’s dreams of an NCAA Tournament on their home floor.

We will have live coverage from the Schottenstein Center tonight on X/Twitter @tSilverBulletin as Ohio State looks to continue its hunt for its first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2022.
