Ryan Day recaps Ohio State’s gritty win over Texas, highlighting Julian Sayin’s poise, defensive toughness, and improvements ahead of Week 2.

Following Ohio State’s gritty 14-7 victory over Texas, head coach Ryan Day met with the media to discuss his team’s performance, areas of growth, and expectations heading into Week 2. Day praised his players for their competitiveness and toughness while stressing that plenty of improvements still need to be made.

One for each Top 10 win during this streak, here are the seven takeaways from Day’s press conference:

1. Julian Sayin Showed Poise in First Start

Day commended quarterback Julian Sayin for his composure in his first collegiate start, noting his ability to process defensive looks and stay confident even when plays didn’t go as planned.

“I don’t think he ever flinched,” Day said. “It was a good start, and he’ll continue to grow.”

Day highlighted Sayin’s connection with Carnell Tate later in the game as an encouraging sign and pointed to the value of real-time iPad film review in helping the freshman adjust in-game.

2. Running Back Rotation Will Continue

James Peoples and CJ Donaldson split carries against Texas. Day indicated the Buckeyes will continue to rotate their backs much like they did last season.

“You’ll probably see James get more carries this week and maybe C.J. the next,” Day explained. “We’re going to need all of these guys.”

3. Establishing Identity Through Physical Play

Day emphasized that Ohio State is building its identity around toughness, while acknowledging the offense needs to be more explosive.

“The way we fought in the trenches, the way we tackled, the way we ran, you could see that,” he said. “That’s a great start.”

The Ohio State head coach admitted the execution wasn’t perfect but said the Buckeyes proved they could compete with anyone in the country.

4. Self-Criticism on Play Calling

Day reflected on the late-game offensive series with a critical eye, admitting he would have liked to be more aggressive to close out the win.

“At the end of the day, you just have to win the game,” Day said. “But I think we could’ve gone and won it right there instead of just managing it.”

5. Defense Passed Its First Big Test

Day praised defensive coordinator Matt Patricia and the unit’s execution against a talented Texas offense. He singled out Jermaine Matthews and Caleb Downs for their leadership and physical play.

“It was a very well-thought-out plan, but the credit goes to the players for putting it on the field,” Day noted.

The Buckeye defense limited Texas’ possessions, controlled time of possession, and showed strong tackling across all three levels.

6. Offensive Line Set a Foundation

Despite facing a strong Texas defensive front, Ohio State’s offensive line did not allow a sack. Day credited their effort and physicality:

“You watched how hard they played—that’s something we can build off of.”

7. Get Better Every Week Brick By Brick

The list of improvements is long as you would expect early in the season. It includes: cleaner execution, more explosive plays, improved special teams, and sustained high-level performance throughout games.

“We’ve got miles to go,” Day admitted. “But if our identity is competitiveness and grit, then we’ll have a chance.”

Ryan Day left no doubt that while the Buckeyes are proud of their season-opening win, they aren’t satisfied. The foundation of toughness is in place, but the focus now turns to sharpening execution, building consistency, and developing an identity capable of sustaining another championship run.
