Ohio State’s shutout win over Purdue propels the Buckeyes through its second November test as it appears to be peaking at the right time.
Dear Fellow Buckeyes,
The Silver Bullets last allowed an offensive touchdown in the fourth quarter against Nebraska. Jim Knowles and the defensive staff seem to have figured out their unit, as it’s playing as well as any in the country. If Ohio State continues to stifle teams at this level, it will be extremely challenging to beat.
At Ohio State, the philosophy is to play your best football in November and the postseason, and after the last two weeks, the Buckeyes are peaking at the right time.
Offensively, Carson Hinzman is the solution to Ohio State’s problem up front. It’s nearing a total flip to say the offensive line is becoming a strength as the unit gels. Quinshon Judkins and TreVeyon Henderson are doing their part in the ground game and are also being an extension of the protection. Both RBs are excelling in run and pass protection as well.
Ohio State’s featured backs benefit from the rotations as their legs are fresher in the new-look extended season with the 12-team playoff. Typically, the later in the season, the more the elite Ohio State teams lean on the running game. Add in Will Howard’s legs, and stopping and defending the Buckeyes is difficult.
Moving outside, Jeremiah Smith now holds the record for most touchdown receptions (9) as a freshman, breaking Cris Carter’s record (8). The freshman phenom has found the end zone in every game except Penn State.
Speaking of hard-to-defend, the wide receivers are improving by the week. Emeka Egbuka is the most unselfish player in the country and the leader of the WR room. No. 2 is closing in on a handful of Ohio State receiving records himself down the stretch.
Carnell Tate has also been making waves over the last few games. He is among the more talented players in the nation, giving Will Howard reliable options no matter where he turns with the football.
Purdue entered the game at 1-7, but Ohio State took care of business as they should have, winning 45-0. The defense forced two turnovers, including a scoop and score tag teamed by JT Tuimoloau and Jack Sawyer. Ryan Day’s team appears focused on all of its goals ahead.
