Bullet Points: 2023 Ohio State Recruiting Defensive Updates

The Buckeyes are coming off a bye week and looking forward to tomorrows tilt against a defensive-minded Iowa Hawkeyes team. But before looking ahead to the game, Ryan Day and his staff were certainly busy on the recruiting trail. Yesterday, the No. 4 Interior offensive lineman in the 2024 class pledged his services to the Buckeyes in New Palestine, Indiana’s Ian Moore.

With this commitment, Ohio State offensive line coach Justin Frye lands his big first out of state offensive lineman for the 2024 cycle and helps the Buckeyes add to what is sure to be a loaded class headlined by the top recruit in the country and top No.1 QB Dylan Raiola.

The 2024 class has certainly started off strong but Day and his staff are still looking to put the finishing touches on their 2023 class. Specifically, the Buckeyes are still looking to land at least one of the big three Defensive End names if not two of those three. The trio of Keon Keeley, Damon Wilson, and Matayo Uiagalelei are still at large as Ohio State, Alabama, Georgia, and USC all seem to be the big players for the blue chip edge rushers. Luckily for the Buckeyes staff, it looks like they are certainly getting close to landing at least one of three, as the Buckeyes have taken the lead for Wilson following a great visit to see him during the bye week.

Much is still up in the air on the Uiagalelei and Keeley front but I still have the Buckeyes landing one of those two. At this time I’d lean more towards Keeley. However, the 2023 defensive line recruiting is not set on those three as Daevin Hobbs is still set to announce his commitment next month on the 25th of November.

The Buckeyes only entered the Hobbs recruitment back on September 29th, but they instantly became a player for the highly touted defensive lineman. Hobbs quickly took the offer seriously as he got himself a visit on campus for October 1st during the Rutgers game where the Buckeyes walked through Scarlet Knights. The top-100 prospect will be making a decision between Ohio State, North Carolina, Alabama, Michigan, Tennessee and Georgia. Hobbs seemed to be trending towards his home state Tar Heels throughout his recruitment and that was with Alabama and Georgia in the mix. So do the Buckeyes have a shot? Absolutely. I heard from a variety of sources Hobbs was pretty much ready to announce his commitment during the month of October so the fact he moved it back a month following the Ohio State offer means you have to imagine there’s some real smoke. He still very well could be leaning North Carolina’s direction but I have feeling Larry Johnson may have pulled another late rabbit out of the hat.
