Bullet Points: What New 2023 QB Offer Means, And A Pair Of Five-Star’s Trending In Ohio State’s Direction

The news continues to keep on rolling on in for a medley of recruits. With spring camp ramping back up, Ohio State has dished out a variety of offers to some deserving talent around the country.

March 10th, Ohio State officially offered Briarwood, Alabama Quarterback Christopher Vizzina. Vizzina is ranked as a top ten QB in the country and is considered to be a plug and play QB. The Buckeyes offered Vizzina while he was on a recruiting visit yesterday in Columbus. The rising class of 2023 gunslinger currently posses 31 offers and that number is likely to climb in his senior year. After speaking with a variety of sources close to this recruitment it appears there is definitely some legitimate interest from Vizzina.

The Silver Bulletin does not have any official quotes from Vizzina on his visit yet but it was definitely one of the more meaningful visits we’ve seen coming from the 2023 class. At this time I still believe believe Dylan Lonergan is the priority target but it’s really going to be a first come, first serve type of deal to fill that QB position in the 2023 class. There are not many people who have the luxury to earn that Ohio State QB offer, with the chance to work under Ryan Day. I suspect this may speed the process up for one of the two and if I had to put my money on the player being more likely to lock in that spot, I would go with Vizzina.

In other recruiting news, there’s two major names that are really picking up some steam in terms of trending Ohio State’s way. First we go down to Florida with the number three ranked player in the country in Cormani McClain. I had the chance to speak to McClain a while back, and I remember thinking then Ohio State had a legitimate shot but it always stuck with me, “When was the last time Ohio State landed a future five-star corner from Florida and held onto that commitment?” Again, maybe it’s still some of the left over sting of Jaheim Singletary but the last time the Buckeyes actually signed a five-star corner from the sunshine state was Shaun Wade so I think my feelings were warranted.

However, as his recruitment rolled McClain seemed to be shifting away from the Buckeyes until about a couple weeks ago when I heard from a few sources that McClain still had intentions to visit Columbus and that they were very much still on his radar. With that being said at this time I can assure you the Buckeyes are sitting in the back seat with a chance to leapfrog Alabama and Florida with a good visit. The biggest factor is McClain has been growing an incredible relationship with Tim Walton as well as Perry Eliano. Whether McClain ends up spurning the Buckeyes for the Tide, like most five-star DB’s from Florida do, the additions of Walton and Eliano are certainly paying dividends on the recruiting trail and pumped life into a recruitment that once seemed dead.

Speaking of another recruitment that was in a similar spot but has now been revived by Walton mainly, is five-star safety Caleb Downs. The Georgia safety is still a Bama lean no doubt, but the chance to play in a safety driven Jim Knowles defense has really changed the mindset of Downs in his recruitment. Again, the Buckeyes are likely behind Bama and Notre Dame right now but Walton has pumped so much life back into this recruitment I would not be surprised at all if by the end the Buckeyes were to land the top safety in the 2023 class.

There’s still a whole senior year left for all three of these 2023 recruits but it’s likely the Buckeyes are becoming major players in all three recruitments. Whether they land all three or none of the three, the Buckeyes certainly are heading in the right direction in these recruiting battles and I expect them to continue this momentum to National Signing Day.
