Bullet Points: Glenville Pipeline, Tackett Curtis Visit, 2023 QB Trends

There’s been lots of interesting Ohio State news in the recruiting world as of late. With some players likely trending Ohio State’s way and others trending away, The Silver Bulletin’s “Bullet Points” session is where you get all the latest and greatest news on Ohio State recruiting.

As of March 8th, Ohio State has officially offered 2023 Glenville Linebacker Arvell Reese. Reese is four-star linebacker by the 247 composite rankings and considered to be the No.27 ranked LB in the country. The Buckeyes also a few months ago offered 2024 Glenville cornerback Bryce West.

Ohio State has had quite a pipeline from Glenville in the past, with Ted Ginn Jr. Cardale Jones, Marshon Lattimore, Troy Smith, and others coming from the traditional Cleveland powerhouse. Ryan Day has put an emphasis on keeping the best players in Ohio as he learned from his former mentor Urban Meyer. With Glenville starting to turn out some top level recruits once again, it will only add to Ohio State’s recruiting success in the future. I feel confident at this time in saying we can expect both to becomes Buckeyes when the Ohio State staff gives them the go-ahead to do so.

In other positive recruiting news, 2023 linebacker Tackett Curtis had a chance to visit Columbus yesterday and it appears the visit went as well as it could of. The Many, Louisiana four-star linebacker is being looked at as a priority target for the Buckeyes and has even drawn some comparisons to James Laurinaitis out of high school. No one seems to have a real strong grasp on where Curtis will end up at this time. Curtis holds 45 offers with 40 of them being in the power five. From what I’ve heard, Ohio State is a major player here as well as Oklahoma, Clemson, Georgia and Stanford. I think the Buckeyes are making a really good impression and Curtis could be a really dynamic player in a Jim Knowles defense.

Knowles announced today that he will need to get Ohio State linebacker Cade Stover involved in the defense is much as possible in order to get the best athletes on the field to make plays. I’m sure the pitch to Curtis went very similar and would have been shown that he can play a similar role whether it’s giving him a chance to stunt off the edge, or to plug gaps in run stop. Curtis has a similar frame to Stover at 6-foot-3, 220-pounds and could be used in all facets of the game. The Buckeyes do not often land recruits from Louisiana but I think they certainly have the chance here. LSU seems to have some guys higher on their radar and have not offered Curtis. This likely tells me they do not plan on it either so this should be really who’s ever got the best recruiting pitch as well as which campus he falls in love with. I like the Buckeyes chances and Curtis would be an ideal fit in Columbus.

In some negative news, Ohio State’s top QB target in 2023 is likely trending away from the Buckeyes in Nicholaus Iamaleava. It’s no secret that Iamaleava was a major fan of Marcus Mariota growing up due to his west coast ties and Samoan heritage. Oregon just made a major hire in Dan Lanning and took it to the Buckeyes last season in Columbus which would not have helped their pitch to the five-star QB. I suspect Iamaleava will commit to the Ducks very shortly, leaving the Buckeyes to focus in on another QB.

I’ve mentioned before on a Bullet Points series that the Buckeyes definitely had a 1A and 1B option. The other name to watch is Dylan Lonergan. Lonergan is a four-star pocket passer out of Georgia who has the ability to really stretch the field with his arm strength as well is fairly nimble, being able to slide through the pocket and escape pressure when needed. Lonergan has very similar attributes to Kyle McCord and I expect the Buckeyes now to zero in on Lonergan as their priority target in the 2023 class. The Buckeyes may have a better chance than they once would have, as a guy from the state of Georgia recently paved his NFL path by taking a pit stop in Columbus. In fact, Lonergan has mentioned in past interviews that he’s taken notice of what Justin Fields did while at Ohio State and if it feels right then he could see himself following a similar path. Again, I really like the Buckeyes chances here and as long as they can hold off the in state Bulldogs, then Lonergan I would expect to become a Buckeye when it’s all said and done.
