The Buckeyes are building some great momentum on the recruiting trail with new coaching additions Justin Frye, Jim Knowles, Perry Eliano, Tim Walton hitting the trail hard right out of the game. In this Bullet Points session we’re going to take a look at some recruitments that are trending in favor of the Buckeyes due to the recent additions.
Good news for the Ohio State staff: in-state offensive tackle Luke Montgomery said yesterday via Twitter that he will be making his commitment announcement on February 17th. The reason I consider this to be good news is that I have considered the Buckeyes to be in the driver seat of this recruitment the whole way to this point and with Frye meeting with the family only two weeks ago, it means Montgomery’s feelings were reaffirmed. It’s no secret that Frye is very well liked by recruits, and it would be appear he had a great first few meetings with the Montgomery family. If Montgomery was to extend his time line it would have been a bad sign but now all things are pointing Ohio State’s way.

Jim Knowles has been considered to be one of the best minds in college football the past few years in terms of defensive scheming and X’s and O’s, but the biggest question for him was how could he recruit when he got to the bigger stage. It appears some recruits seem to love what they have heard from Knowles so far. Ohio State’s biggest 2023 linebacker target Troy Bowles has been building his relationship everyday. The Silver Bulletin was able to get a quick response from Bowles this past week when asking how his new relationship was with the newly hired Defensive Coordinator.
“We’ve been talking everyday, he’s a lot different than other coaches but he knows the game and I really like that Coach Day hired him,” said Bowles.
Bowles is a high four-star who will likely jump up to a five-star in his senior year. Knowles has his work cut out for him but he seems to be up to the challenge. The Silver Bulletin likes Ohio State’s chances in this recruitment but it is still way too early here to make a prediction as we expect Bowles to take this pretty close to the early National Sign Day.
Moving towards the secondary there’s definitely been some question marks around new cornerbacks coach Perry Eliano. Eliano has got to pick up where Kerry Coombs had left off with some major priority targets. Specifically, the Buckeyes were very close to landing an early commitment from five-star A.J. Harris due to the relationship Coombs had with him. However, the Silver Bulletin has been informed of some good news on that front, it’s expected that although Coombs departure could have been detrimental to landing Harris, it does not appear now that it will be make or break for him. Ohio State and Clemson were considered to be the leaders by many before Coombs and Venables departed their respective schools. Now, it appears that Georgia would be considered to be the leader at this time. In this recruitment, it will benefit the Buckeyes the longer Harris extends it. The more time Harris has to build his relationship with Eliano, the better and it could result in the Buckeyes earning his services.
The Buckeyes staffers have lots of work cut out for them on the recruiting trail but the massive coaching adjustment period has not seemed to put them at a setback on the recruiting side of it. Any time there is a coaching transition period, concerns seem to rise with recruiting. Luckily for Ryan Day’s sake, he made some hires who were all well respected coaches and have made an impact already on the recruiting trail.
