With the 2022 class almost wrapping itself up, it’s time to look forward and zone in on some top recruits left on Ohio State’s big board. In the 2023 cycle, the Buckeyes orginally landed the top Safety prospect on the board in Sonny Styles, who just reclassified to the 2022 class. Since his reclassification, it’s been a full on press from the Ohio State staff to land another top level safety for the 2023 class.
2023 St. John’s Prep, four-star Safety Joenel Aguero is certainly a player who’s feeling the love and full court press of Ohio State and Ryan Day.
“We’ve been talking everyday and it’s been great. He really wants me to be a part of what they’re building over there,” said Aguero. “I’m from Massachusetts and [Coach Day] is from New Hampshire, so we kind of have that strong connection already. So that’s why he’s been recruiting me so hard…We talk more than just football, his message to me has been that I’d fit will in their system with the three safeties. I like that a lot.”
Aguero has had a few opportunities to visit Columbus in the summer. He even posted a photo with his mom on twitter yesterday from his visit. But what are his thoughts on thoughts on Columbus?
“To be honest, I just love Columbus. The campus is amazing… I went up there in the summer and I couldn’t believe how many people were there compared to all my other visits that summer.”
Any athlete as highly touted as Aguero is going to receive a ton of attention from the SEC. In fact Georgia is still thought to be his leader. However, Aguero says he understands the pedigree that comes with playing in the Big Ten.
“I feel it’s the SEC and Big Ten, they are definitely the best two conferences, and it’s the only two conferences I see myself playing in.” Said Aguero.
All of the crystal balls for the highly touted safety are in favor of Georgia currently. But when asking Aguero if Ohio State has a chance to beat them out, he said this one may not be done just yet.
“They definitely got a shot, they’ve been a long-time school for me and everyone should know that it’s not over.” Aguero said.
Aguero has only released a top 10 schools list which was back in October. Although he says he’s been very close to committing a couple times.
“Right now, I’m just trying to keep it close to me because of all the coaching changes.” Said Aguero. I was about ready to commit but now I’m going to wait just a little bit longer because I’ve seen everybody switching up schools, and I just want to make sure a coach is going to stay there and not leave.”
Not all recruits in the 2023 class are close to announcing a commitment. However, Aguero seems to have a good grasp on his comfortability in making a decision.
“Honestly I’m looking to commit soon, but I’m still trying to figure out a date and see a couple more coaching situations before I do it.”
