Matt Barnes Leaving Ohio State to Become Memphis Defensive Coordinator

Following Ohio State’s Rose Bowl victory over Utah, it was reported that Ohio State safeties coach/special teams coordinator Matt Barnes would be leaving to become the new defensive coordinator at Memphis.

Now, the news has been made official.

Due to the addition of Jim Knowles as defensive coordinator, Ohio State had one-too-many coaches on staff. Barnes departure eliminates that problem.

Barnes, who came over from Maryland following the 2018 season, was the special teams coordinator his first year in Columbus before adding the safeties room to his responsibilities. This year, he was promoted to interim play-caller in September after repeated poor performances from Kerry Coombs’ unit.

Barnes will now head to Memphis to work under Ryan Silverfield, on a team that finished 6-6 this season. The Tigers were scheduled to play in the Hawaii bowl before the game was canceled.
